GENERAL
Q: What is Ch21Con?
A: The Chapter Twenty-One Conference (or Ch21Con) is a new conference by and for twenty-something writers! We put a focus on providing a fun, community-based atmosphere while simultaneously teaching everything you need to know about writing and publishing in order to launch a writing career.
Q: Who can attend Ch21Con?
A: Anyone ages twenty-one to twenty-nine. (Are you under twenty-one? You should attend our sister conference, the Chapter One Young Writers Conference!)
Q: I keep seeing jokes about this conference being “like Ch1Con + booze and existential crises.” What does that mean?
A: This means the team of volunteers behind Ch21Con has a sort of dark sense of humor. It also means Ch21Con will involve alcohol (and, due to the inherent nature of twenty-somethings, probably a lot of commiserating about “rent” and “careers” and “figuring out what we’re even doing with our lives”).
Q: Wait, will there be alcohol at this conference?
A: We will not provide alcohol during the conference itself (and request that you don’t bring alcohol or show up drunk–after all, conferences are for learning!). However, there will be a kickoff cocktail hour on the Friday night before the conference.
Q: What if I don’t drink, or don’t feel like drinking at the time of the conference?
A: If you don’t want to drink, that’s totally fine! You’re under no obligation to drink and non-alcoholic beverages will be available at all times. The option’s just there if you want it. (And we can promise that you won’t be the only one there not drinking.)
Q: What do I need to bring to the conference?
A: All you need to bring is something with which to take notes, any books you already own which you’d like the speakers to sign, and your lovely face!
Q: How should I dress?
A: We like to keep things casual, so feel free to wear your t-shirt and jeans. (We would say “wear whatever you want,” but then there’s always that one person who feels the need to show up in a birthday suit.)
Q: Why is the Ch21Con logo a Bloody Mary?
A: This is because, besides having a dark sense of humor, we also think we’re much funnier than we actually are. Which is to say: Ch1Con’s logo is a tomato, and since literally the original concept behind Ch21Con was “Ch1Con but with alcohol,” we figured a more grownup tomato (aka a Bloody Mary) would represent us perfectly. (To learn why the Ch1Con logo is a tomato, visit their own FAQ page here.)
Q: What should I do if someone harasses me at one of your events?
While we’ve never to our knowledge had an issue of harassment of any sort at a Chapter One Events-sponsored event, we do take harassment very seriously. We strive to maintain a safe, welcoming, and accepting environment for all attendees, speakers, vendors, and volunteers at all of our events. To review our organization-wide, zero tolerance anti-harassment policy, or to report an incident of harassment, please visit this page.
2021 CONFERENCE
Q: When and where will the 2021 conference occur?
A: Ch1Con 2021 will take place on Saturday, July 31. You’ll have a choice of attending through an online livestream or coming in person to the Hilton Garden Inn in Chicago.
Q: How much will the conference cost and what does registration include?
A: Conference admission this year is $50.00 online and $70.00 in person, with a discount of $10 off for previous attendees and Ch1Camp attendees.
In addition to conference admission, registered attendees will receive the following:
- Access to presentation handouts, coupons, and a schedule (all, of course, digitally).
- At least one free book by various authors as well as a plethora of swag from dozens of generous authors (shipped to you after the conference!).
If you have questions or concerns about the cost of attendance, feel free to e-mail us at chapter21conference@gmail.com.
Q: What type of writing will the conference focus on?
A: Because we share speakers with Ch1Con, we put a strong focus on fiction, especially children’s fiction (young adult and middle grade novels). However, we’ll still have lots of cool resources for writing for an adult audience, short stories, scripts, memoirs, and more–so check us out if you write any of those, too!
Q: Who will teach the sessions at the 2021 conference?
A: Ch1Con speakers are young writers, just like you. They’re currently at varying stages in their writing careers, and all are experts in their field. To learn more about our 2021 speakers, visit this page!
Q: When will registration open for attending Ch21Con?
A: Registration is open now! Learn more by visiting our Registration page.
